Galvanized Steel and Sustainable Construction

Introduction

 

Concerns about the effects of climate change are both serious and urgent. With a growing world population and a consequent increasing use of engineered materials, the need to maximise the value of raw materials by keeping buildings, infrastructure, resources and materials in use for as long as possible is clear.


This CPD outlines the building sector's impact on climate change and closely examines the link between durability, sustainable construction and life cycle costs. The difference between VOCs and carbon footprint is explained, and how the unique properties of hot dipped galvanized coatings support sustainable construction and the circular economy is described in detail.


HDG steel is ideally placed to enable design for durability, deconstruction, disassembly and flexibility, as well as the reuse, recovery and remanufacture of materials.



Biography

 

The Galvanizers Association of Australia (GAA) is an industry association founded in 1963.  Provided advice and technical publications around the correct design and application of galvanized products.


David Harrison is the Market and Specifications Engineer for the GAA. PhD (Chemical Engineering), 25+ years in the steel industry.
